33. Repeating of Extreme Unction

1. Extreme unction prepares a sick person to face hisjudgment. If a person who has received this sacrament recovers fromhis sickness, he must some day come again into danger of death. Andhe will need again the strengthening of soul afforded by extremeunction. Thus the sacrament of extreme unction can be received morethan once.

2. But a person does not receive extreme unction more thanonce while he is in the same danger. He may receive itmore than once in the same sickness, for a sickness maycontinue for a long time, with only now and again a period of realperil. A sick person, therefore, may receive extreme unction ineach new danger. Indeed, it is the practice of the Church, in caseof a person continuing in serious illness without showing muchchange, to permit the administering ofextreme unction once amonth. For, after a month of serious sickness with no markedimprovement, a person may well be considered to be in a new danger,a more immediate peril of death.

"The supreme perfection of man in this life is to be so united to God that all his soul with all its faculties and powers are so gathered into the Lord God that he becomes one spirit with him, and remembers nothing except God, is aware of and recognises nothing but God, but with all his desires unified by the joy of love, he rests contentedly in the enjoyment of his Maker alone."
St Albert the Great

"Shun too great a desire for knowledge, for in it there is much fretting and delusion. Intellectuals like to appear learned and to be called wise. Yet there are many things the knowledge of which does little or no good to the soul, and he who concerns himself about other things than those which lead to salvation is very unwise. "
Thomas á Kempis

"What good does it do to speak learnedly about the Trinity if, lacking humility, you displease the Trinity? Indeed it is not learning that makes a man holy and just, but a virtuous life makes him pleasing to God. "
Thomas á Kempis
